If you’re looking for a unique addition to your holiday cocktail table this year, consider some shrub. The Hudson Standard is a small maker of bitters and cocktail mixers called shrub, a sweet and tangy fruit mixer that originated in Colonial America. Seasonal fruit, spices, organic apple cider vinegar and sweetener are combined to make a tart syrup, perfect for cocktails or with seltzer for a natural soda.
The small-batch producer launched in 2013 with one shrub flavor and two bitters and aims to use ingredients sourced from local Hudson Valley farmers whenever possible. And, all of the items are handcrafted and sold with a crew of only four women in Hudson, NY.
The Hudson Standard recently launched its newest shrub, Winter Switchel. After over-ordering some fresh organic ginger, the team experimented with their version of switchel, a natural energy tonic traditionally sweetened with molasses. Using local honey, tumeric, cayenne and black peppercorn, they came up with a “winter booster” of sorts, an elixir with anti-inflammatory benefits. The company recommends mixing with hot water for a soothing tea, with seltzer to create a spicy ginger soda, or even in a cocktail.
